"Sangyeongpyo"and Baekdudaegan were known to the world again thanks to Lee Wu Hyung who was conducting research on the "Daedon-gyeojido". As a mountaineer who was producing maps, Lee focused on the research of "Daedon-gyeojido" . Among many questions, he is known to not have understood the clearly drawn mountain range in the wide plain area of Gimpo. In 1980, he accidentally got hold of the "Sangyeongpyo", published by the Joseon Gwangmun Association in 1913 while talking to the owner of an ancient book store, located in Insa-dong. As result of visiting the site while comparing and conducting research on the "Daedon-gyeojido" and "Sangyeongpyo", he realized that the existence of Yuyeokreung at the southern part of the Han River, which traverses the Gimpo plain. He confirmed the fact that the mountain range of the"Daedon-gyeojido" and the Hannam jeongmaek of the "Sangyeongpyo" corresponded to each other, and realized that these two adhere to the traditional 'Principle of Mountain Scenary'. In 1985, he reissued the"Daedon-gyeojido"to the same size as the original copy, and published works such as "Daedon-gyeojido - Dongyeo Map Jugi Attached, (3/2) Condensed Version"(1990), "Daedon-gyeojido's Dokdo"(1990), "In-depth Research on the Mountains and Mountain Ranges in Our Land"(1993) and others. The following is a brief explanation on the circulation process on the existence of Baekdudaegan and research pertaining to "Sangyeongpyo".
In January 1986, the monthly <Sports Leisure> became the first press and media that used the term, Baekdudaegan, as per Lee Wu Hyung's recommendation. In July 24 of the same year, <Joseon Ilbo> publicized an article titled, "Japanese Changed the Name of Mountain Range in Korea". Since then, the concepts of Daegan-Junggan-Jungmac begun to spread.
In 1988, the annaul magazine "Excelsio", published by the Korea Student Alpine Federation , did a special coverage of the Baekdudaegan. The coverage included a story written by Park Gi Seung , "What is Baekdudaegan", for the first part, and the record on the mountain range traversing titled, "Going to the Baekdudaegan"for the second part. This extensive coverage became a defining moment that increased the interest of the members at the university's Alpine Club.
After 1990, major dailies and weeklies, needless to mention monthly magazines that specialize in mountain-climbing, began to cover the Baekdudaegan and Jeongmaek record on the mountain range traversing as in a competition. In addition to independent volumes on the personal record on the mountain range traversing, virtual record on the mountain range traversing on the Baekdudaegan that lay on the North Korea side was also published (2001).
In 1990, Yong Su Park began to write articles in the monthly <People and Mountain> under the title of "Unraveling the Puzzle of Distorted Name of Mountain Range", and published Sangyeongpyo", which photo-printed the Joseon Gwangmun Association's "Sangyeongpyo". Bibliographical introduction of "Research on Sangyeongpyo "(Subtitle:Centered on the Bibliographical Review such as source book, publication period and Others) was added on, and this publication provided an opportunity for the general public to get exposed to the original facet of the "Sangyeongpyo".
Professor Yang Bo Gyeong of Dep.of Geography from the Sungshin Women's University published "Shin Gyeong Jun's "Sansugo ("Manuscript on Mountains and Rivers")" and "Sangyeongpyo""(monthly publication "Land Research", 1992. 3.) and published research papers such as "Nature Perception System during Joseon Era"("Citizens' Lecture on the Korean History" Volume 14, 1994.), "Formation of Baekdudaegan Concept during the Joseon Era"("Jindanhakbo", Volume 83, 1997. 6.) and others. His papers provide an in-depth understanding and broad insight into the historical aspect of the geography in Korea.
In 1993,Jo Seok Pil published "For Sangyeongpyo". The first part, "Sangyeongpyo Story" provides easy and simple explanation of "Sangyeongpyo" and the principles involved. The second part, "Report on Honam Jeongmaek", published the actual experience of directly traversing the length of Honam Jeongmaek in the form of report. In 1997, a book titled "There is No Taebaek Mountain Range" was published and a copy of the Joseon Gwangmun Association's "Sangyeongpyo" was attached in the back of the book, which increased the attention in the "Sangyeongpyo" and Baekdudaegan.
In 1996,Park Min submitted a masters' thesis titled "Classification System for the South Korean Mountain Ranges and Transition of Denominations"(Graduate School of the Korea University). This thesis does not directly target "Sangyeongpyo" or Baekdudaegan as research subjects, but it is often referred to as the data that addresses the transition of the Baekdudaegan system to the current mountain range system and the problems of the Korean theories pertaining to mountain ranges.
In December 2000, Hyun Jin Sang published the "Korean Language Sangyeongpyo". Besides transforming the Joseon Gwangmun Association "Sangyeongpyo", written in print version of Chinese characters, into the Korean language, he also included research papers titled, "the Joseon Gwangmun Association"'s "Sangyeongpyo", "Jeungbomunheonbigo" and "Comparative Analysis of Yeojigo Mountains and Streams", and all types of indices. By conducting a comparative analysis of the two literatures, he revised the mistakes and omissions of the current "Sangyeongpyo", and demonstrated the difference on a same space, and claimed that "Sangyeongpyo" was made by referring to "Yeojigo"'s "Mountains and Streams" among "Note on the Eastern Country's Bibliography".
Likewise, research on Baekdudaegan and "Sangyeongpyo" was conducted since 1980, centered around few mountaineers. At the beginning, their effort began as a means of making the unfamiliar name of Baekdudaegan and the existence of "Sangyeongpyo"known, and as the serial publication on Baekdudaegan and JungMac record on the mountain range traversing came about, they became widely known among mountaineers. Presently, mountain range traversing field investigation of Baekdudaegan and JungMac's mountain range traversing on the South Korean section is complete, and as such it consolidated its position as a new form of mountain climbing. This activity marks the main ridgeline of DaeGan and JungMac on the map, and resulted in the publication of field visit report, which also serves as a guidebook, by paying field visit, following the said ridgeline to traverse the mountain range. As such, there is a positive aspect of identifying the substance of the matter and of charging the state of damage. On the other hand, this activity gave birth to negative side effects such as casting away the practice of perceiving the"Sangyeongpyo" in its entirety and limiting it to the Daegan-Jungmac while fixing the concept of Jungmaek to the linear concept of mountain range traversing route. Meanwhile, another side effect is inducement of commercial competition.
When entering into the 1990s, government bodies and some geographers, needless to mention, mountaineers began to show an interest, and as such multi-faceted and in-depth research efforts are taking place. Demands are surfacing from various corners of the society such as government's demand that the substance of the Daegan-Junggan-Jungmac get recognized, opinion that these be collected into the map published by the National Geography Institute, opinion that Baekdudaegan and "Sangyeongpyo" be included into the textbooks, claims made by the citizens' groups that Baekdudaegan needs to be protected and preserved from the environmental preservation point of view, and submission of legislative bills towards this end.
