Suggestion for restoring and preserving Baekdudaegan does not mean closing down all the roads that transverse Baekdudaegan and Jung-Gan?Jung-Mac to restore the mountain range. Instead, this suggestion starts off by first establishing Baekdudaegan, Jang-baek-Jung-Gan, Nak-Nam-Jung-Mac and others as official terms, declaring traditional views on the geography, and claiming and demanding that they be included in all types of official documents, maps and textbooks.
And restoration and preservation of natural environment and ecosystems are planned beforehand. The said suggestion merely advocates thinking and pursuing the methods of harmonizing people's activities for the designation and management of green belt region, securing of water resources and others with environmental friendliness within the larger framework of understanding the principle of mountain scenery. To advocate the preservation of Baekdudaegan is to protect and preserve Jung-Gan?Jung-Mac and their attached mountainous district and rivers along with Baekdudaegan.
Understanding national territory means understanding the topography and terrain of national territory. In order to easily understand the topography and terrain of national territory, a scientific structure that enables view of the national territory in its entirety is necessary. Baekdudaegan and Jung-Gan?Jung-Mac are the scientific structures that make the understanding of this land's topography and terrain the easiest. Knowing and understanding Baekdudaegan directly translates into realizing the principle of mountain scenery, and this principle is out traditional view of geography that is scientifically structured to enable us to view this land at a glance.
Baekdudaegan should be called at its face value since it is the denomination used by our ancestors. Our ancestors perceived the mountain range as such, and we need to teach our children accordingly since this perception is the way to identify and transmit all types of geographical information in the easiest, most accurate and fast manner. The name of the land traces back thousands of years, and the perception and the name of mountain range got formed during the comparably long period of time.
Our ethnic group already defined the classification method of mountain ranges 230 years ago. 200 years ago, we developed the "Sangyeongpyo", which named the mountain ranges, to hand it down to the descendants. Accordingly, it is only natural that we should continue the said tradition of geographical view and use the already established names for the mountain ranges.
At this juncture when we need to prepare for the reunification, it is shameful that we are leading our lives without known the accurate geography perception system that was already established by our ancestors. If we do not teach this system to our children who live in the information society, it will be committing a sin to our descendents as people who live in this age. As a matter of course, we need to include Baekdudaegan?Jang-Baek-Jung-Gan?Nak-Nam-Jung-Mac in our children's textbooks and maps, and teach them the ensuing perception system. Before it is too late, it is necessary to recuperate our unique geographical view and to re-establish its academic identity.
When the mountain scenery diagram, which includes drawings of Baekdudaegan, veins and river course, is examined, the mountains and rivers in the nation can be seen at a glace and the map of three nations - Koguryeo, Baekjae, and Shilla - emerge naturally. One cannot help nodding one's head while noticing why Sunsu Monument of King Jinheung was erected at the Maun Summit and Hwangcho Summit, and why Cheonrijang Castle was built using the line it did. And one can notice that there is a close connection between Dae-Gan?Jung-Gan?Jung-Mac and all the lines where flowers bloom and fall and maple leaves that moves southward according to season, dialect, folk song, house structure, eating habits, customs, distribution of vegetation.
Understanding the history, culture, customs, vegetation and climate by looking at the map is the beginning and also the objective of geography. Realizing the differences in life style and culture by topological characteristics, and discovering and understanding specific regions' unique characteristics, which developed by adapting to the climate and natural features, is indeed the short cut to loving and understanding the nation and the people who reside in the said nation.
Anyone would have experienced passing through two regions where one was raining and the other was not at the same time while traveling on car of train. The fact that a small hill that one passes by without paying special attention to is the boundaries between the above mentioned two regions cannot be explained by the system of mountain range. That is the law of nature that unravels naturally when Dae-Gan?Jung-Gan?Jung-Mac, that is, 'mountain scenery' is understood. When one understands Baekdudaegan and realizes the principle of mountain scenery, one cannot help, but become an environmental protectionist since one realizes that the type of river that gets dirtied by a small piece of fruit's covering or a piece of toilet paper dropped from the mountain can differ depending on which side of the ridgeline it falls.
In 1986, North Korea defined the South Korean mountain range according to the concept of Baekdudaegan. Cheokrang Mountain Range, defined by the North Korean nation and academic circle, begins at the Mt. Baekyeo and passes through Mt. Duryu-Cheolryeong-Mt. Taebaek-Mt. Jiri to reach Gujae Summit, located in Hadong in the Southern Gyeonsang Province. As such, this is the 'Baekdu Mountain Range' that extends for a total length of 1,470km. This Baekdu Mountain Range is classified into eight areas; Baekyeo Mountain Range, Bujeonryeong Mountain Range, Bukdaebong Mountain Range, Masikryeong Mountain Range, Cheolryeol Mountain Range, Taebaek Mountain Range, Sobaek Mountain Range, and Jiri Mountain Range. Mountain ranges were classified into 75 ranges such as Macheonryeojng Mountain Range, Hamgyeong Mountain Range, Mantap Mountain Range and others, stemming from the said range as the backbone. They were reformed as a measure to discard remnants of the Japanese colonial rule, found in the field of geography, and they were included in high school textbooks as well.
