Baekdudaegan means 'large mountain range stemming from Mt. Baekdu'. It does not get cut off even once by the water stream, starting from the Mt. Baekdu to reach Mt. Jiri. This term is one specifically tailored for the mountain range that comprises the backbone of the national territory.
Baekdudaegan was materialized by the "Sangyeongpyo", wrote by an unknown person in the 1800s by using "Mountains and Streams"of "Yeojigo", written by Shin Gyeong Jun among the "Note on the Eastern Country's Bibliography", compiled in 1770. This is our traditional geographical perception system while experiencing period of Japanese invasion. And this is Korea's specific geographical perception system that enabled the creation of Kim Jeong Ho's Daedongyeojido Existence of Baekdudaegan became known again in the world when the "Sangyeongpyo", published by the Joseon Gwangmun a Association in 1913, was discovered by Lee Wu Hyung in 1980 when he was conducting research on the Daedongyeojido.
Baekdudaegan is the "main artery" that divides the national territory into South and North, and is also a large watershed that divides the water that flows into the East Sea from that which flows into the Western Sea. It is the birthplace of 14 Junggan-Jungmac, and the origin of rivers. It is also the symbol of a classification system that groups the mountainous district of the Korean peninsula. It is also the basis so Korean people's knowledge base in the humanities, society, culture and history. This is a representative mountain range that comprise the central focal point of the natural environment and ecosystems.
Baekdudaegan is not a line, but a system of continuous mountainous district. That is, it represents the entire national territory. Perception of Baekdudaegan should not be limited to the narrowest meaning of Baekdudaegan (route for mountain range traversing). The narrow definition of Baekdudaegan is that of central mountain range whereas its larger meaning signify central mountain range and its annexed mountainous districts. Moreover, the widest meaning of Baekdudaegan (geological perception system of traditional national territory) refers to the entire national territory. Only when the concept of Baekdudaegan is clearly defined, we can recuperate the perception of national territory's uniformity and unification, inherited from the ancestors. As such, we can remember the symbolic meaning of the Mt. Baekdu, which is the center of Northeastern Asia. In turn, we can also think about various mountain ranges that extend to all sides, centered on this mountain range. Furthermore, re-highlighting ancient concept of land will become possible as well.
Trying to understand Baekdudaegan's geographical characteristics, current vegetation status, biological characteristics, or identifying the level of damage and building restoration, protection and preservation plans are not the questions of focusing on the ridgeline itself. There is a need to start by first becoming aware of the geographical and spatial realities, which are characterized by wide and high spatial size (cubic). Baekdudaegan is an entity that retains appropriate and reasonable geographical scope. It is the forum of immense natural environment, and of ecosystem, and also self-existent nature.
Baekdudaegan should be restored. Our traditional view of geography should be recovered, and there is a need to revive the perception of substance along with denomination. We need to include this subject matter in the maps and textbooks to teach our children. This is the way of eternally protecting and preserving our treasure for the benefit of our descendants who must continue to live in this land. Uniformity and unification of our nation, national territory and compatriots need to be revived. Ecosystem of animals and plants needs to be mutually connected, and soil and water that act as their ground for survival should be protected, and revived into healthy nature. Thus, it needs to be re-born as the ecological axis. This is the path of loving our national territory, compatriots and our nation while leading our lives in the 21st Century.
