 General Description
Daeam mt. and Daewoo mt Natural Preservation Area means the region where the punch ball basin and the Big dragon swamp and the little dragon swamp around Daeam mt, Daewoo mt, Dosol Mt, and the peak of Daeam mt.
The Punch ball area is a round basin with 10km in diameter; the wall of thebasin and the ridge are composed of gneiss; and the ground of the basin is composed of granite. This means that granite is faster to be erosive.
There are highland swamps called the big dragon swamp and the little dragon swamp near the peak of daeam mt.;however, the little dragon swamp already lost its original feature and turned into a forest. The big dragon swamp is the only highland swamp in Korea, having a special environment with many foggy days, and thus offers good data for the research of the ecosystem. There are many colonies in the big dragon swamp, such as Sphagnum palustre, Cares dispalata, spiraea salicifolia, and flower Geranium sibiricum some rare plants such as Gymnadenia conopsea, and pitcher plants are also growing. In addition, 63 kinds of plant plankton, 19 kinds of diatom, and the mountain goat, which is one of the natural treasure, and the golden eagle are observed, and salamander, Korean fire-bellied toad, and Artogeia napi can be also observed. In the valley of Dutayeon, which is connected with this place, 10 indigenous products, such as lenokinhabit. The Daeam mt, Daewoo mt Natural Preservation Area has geographically various characteristics, such as basins and swamps, and has original weather condition, and thus allows rare animals and plants to grow. Furthermore, this place has very valuable plant ecological, plant geographical, and systematic botanical value having north south boundary and east west division of animals and plants; it also has very various natural environment, such as the fauna, special topography, geographical features, and climatic characteristics, and thus designated and protected as natural treasure.
 Details
The punch ball area surrounded by Daeam mt, Dosol mt, Daewoo mt, and Gachil summit is a basin 10km in diameter and its ground has average 500m of height above the sea level, and the height of the basin wall is 1000m. Geologically, the basin walls and the mountains and hills around are composed with gneiss, but the ground of the basin is composed with granite. The river lineage net is centripetal shape. The Big dragon swamp, a highlandmoor which is located at the northwest of Daeam mt shows regionally a right-angled shape of river lineage net, because of its geographical features. The needle-leaf trees, typically appearing near the highlandmoor, do not appear here, but they are deciduous broadleaf trees, and it is a pseudo highlandmoor which has many annual foggy days.
The punch ball, big dragon swamp and the little dragon swamp have similarities with the Dae swamp, and Jang swamp located in the mid-slope of Baekdoo mt, in terms of the geographically characteristic topography and climactic characteristics. The Big Dragon Swamp (about 1,200m above the sea level) is surrounded by the deciduous broadleaf trees growing in the 1,200-1,300m highland and the plants grown there accumulated to become peat status, and raise the surface water. Such a characteristic environment made it possible to form a plant group, such as a nut grass family, Gramineae, Sphagnum palustre, and Saliz purpurea var. japonica. The pH level in the Big Dragom Swamp is 7.5-5.8 and has a high magnesium and calcium content, and the soil pH in the Big Dragon Swamp is 4.4-5.5, which is acid.
The most representative plants growing in the swamp are as follows: Sphagnum cymbifolium, Drosera rotundifolia, Menyanthes trifoliata, Gentiana jamesii, Sanguisorba tenuifolia, Carex dispalata, Utricalaria japonica, Zizania caudiflora, Glyceria leptolepis, Juncus effusus, Lobelia sessilifolia, Phragmites japonica, and Trientalis europaea. As for rare plants, Gentiana jamesii, Viola biflora and Menyanthes trifoliata are growing. Also Carx chordornhiza, which is growing at the big swamp in the mid-slope of Baekdu mt. There once were a little bit of Lychnis wirfordii, which blossoms magnificent flowers, they cannot be seen now, except in the swampy land near the Dragon swamp. In the mountain area around the swampy land, there are many kinds of broadleaf trees, such as royal azalea,Betula ermanii, Betula chinensis, cordata hornbeam, Quercus dentate, Quercus mongolica, Syrinha wolfi, magnolia sieboldii, European bird cherry, Euonymus oxyphyllus, Tripterygium regelii, Acer mandshuricum, painted maple, Japanese Maple, Acer tschonoskii var. rubripes, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Rhamnus davurica, Tilia Sambucus williamsii var. coreana, Bower Actinidia, Wegela subsessilis, Viburnum sargentii, and there also evergreen needle-leaf trees, such as, Abies nephrolepsis, Pinus koraiensis, and Juniperus rigida are growing sparsely. Also Hanabusaya asiatica, Chrysanthemum zawadskii, and Geranium koreanum are growing.
Daewoo mt, Dosol mt, and Daeam mt as well as the western ridge of the Punch ball are one of the branch range of the Taebaek mountains, and are representing the flora of Korean central districts. Quite a part of the woods remain as their natural status, despite the considerable damage from the Korean War. It is also noticeable that there is a large scaled Leontopodium japonicum colony near the Gachil peak, which is connected to Daeam mt and Daewoo mt.
This area offers great value as being the subject of the study of plant ecology, plant geography, and systematic botany with the kinds of plants inhabiting in Korean northern districts, which are growing in the pseudo highlandmoor, as well as its geological characteristics and the yearly foggy conditions. The fauna in this area is comparatively affluent; The golden eagle and mountain goats are inhabiting in the Daeam mt. Many salamanders, red-bellied frogs, and Artogeia napiare inhabiting in the Big Dragon Swamp. In the Doota swamp, about 10 kinds of Korean special fish products, such as lenok and Gonoproktopterus mylodon are living.
