"Sangyeongpyo" is estimated to have been developed in 1800 (enthronement of King Sunjo) by someone who used the [Yeojigo]'s [Mountains and Streams], written by Shin Gyeong Jun as reference among the "Dongguk Bibliographical Remark" compiled in 1770 (46th year of King Yeongjo's reign). There are some who claim that"Sangyeongpyo" was made in 1769 by Gyeong Jun Shin, but this is a wrong claim. Although it is true that Shin Gyeong Jun wrote the [Yeojigo], which became the source of "Sangyeongpyo", he cannot be seen as the author of the "Sangyeongpyo". The reasons as to why are as follows.
First, "Sangyeongpyo" mentions the "Bibliographical Remark" that was compiled in 1770. Moreover, "Sangyeongpyo" points out the mistakes made on the "Bibliographical Remark". Thus, it is unreasonable to assume that Gyeong Jun Shin criticized his mistakes in another book.
Second, "Sangyeongpyo"uses the year denomination, '45th year of King Yeongjong's reign'. 'Yeongjong' is the posthumous name of 'King Yeongjo', and the part on the 45th year of King Yeongjong's reign could be recorded only after 1776 since King Yeongjo passed away in 1776. Thus, "Sangyeongpyo" could not have been published in 1769.
Third, "Sangyeongpyo" uses the denominations such as Pyeongando Chosan, which was revised on 1776, and the Hamgyeongdo Iwon, which was revised in 1800. Likewise, it refers to Chungcheongdo's Noseong, which was revised in 1800, as Iseong. Moreover, "Gergyoungjeongripyo"of "Yeojipyeonram"(The Academy of Korean Studies Jangseogak Archives), uses denominations such as Siheung revised in 1795 (19th year of King Jeongjo's reign), Suwon's Hwanseong, completed in 1796 and Noseung, revised in 1800.
Fourth, "Sangyeongpyo"'s mountain range and branches coincide with the [Yeojigo]'s [Introduction to Mountains and Streams 1], and parts of its contents are the copies of original text. [Yeojigo]'s [Introduction to Mountains and Streams 1] does not include records on the names of mountain ranges including Baekdudaegan, yet it contains clearly defined system for classifying mountains.
Fifth, there are traces on the "Sangyeongpyo" that intentionally excluded some of the denominations used on the original text of [Introduction to Mountains and Streams 1] to avoid double work. Furthermore, it critizes the mistakes made on the original text while some parts are factored in as is. It does not factor in the addendums made on the "Supplemented Bibliographical Remark"(1908). Given these facts and the information pertaining to the life of Gyeong Jun Shin(1712-1781), it is possible to conclude that the author of "Sangyeongpyo" is not Gyeong Jun Shin. The author of the "Sangyeongpyo" is yet to be found.
