The Baekdudaegan forms the external structure of Korea's mountains. Thus, the appearance and formation of the mountain ranges is directly reflected from the Baekdudaegan. It exists on land, connected to water, drawn out to make it clear which mountain marks the beginning, which mountain it passes, and which mountain it ends on.

The current system of mountain ranges is not classified by the topography thatis one part of geography, but formed by the tectonic geology which is one part of geology. This is not a shape of nature which is shown on the earth. This is to study when and which factors influenced the forming of soils and rocks and to classify the mountain ranges on the basis of geological features. As the mountain ranges mainly understood by geological features are ' the connection of mountains in a line which are formed at the same time and same factors', it is not necessary that the mountains ranges be connected each other. Also it is unquestionable that rivers disconnect mountain and mountain.

This system of mountain ranges resulted in a severance of traditional understanding of mountains and rivers. From today's systems of mountain ranges, our country is considered as a collection of individual objects with different origins and characters, which is not an organic existence with only one root. Centering the Chugaryung valley linking Wonsan and Kwangwha, geological features of the south and north are different each other. And Baekdudaegan, starting from Baekdu mountain to Jiri mountain, is split into Machunryung mountains, a part of Hamkyung mountains (Buchunryung mountains), Nanglim mountains, Taebaek mountains and Sobaek mountains. Hence the Baekdu Mountainbecame a common mountain with no special importance.

Our ancestors thought it is natural for Mother Nature and human being to get along with each other. Also they expressed our country as a landscape harmonized with mountains and waters and realized a theory recognizing mountain by water and splitting of a river course by a line of mountains. The change to the oppositional and confrontational structure, which a view of nature, landscape and country are vanished and people are devoting themselves to utilize, develop, conquer and destroy, might be caused by analytic and measuring thought that is only interested in what kind of soils and rocks the earth consists of, forgetting the earth is a living organic existence as well as field of life.
