It is obvious that we are getting useful information from geological features and map of mountain ranges. But mountain ranges in our current geography textbook should take a process of review.
'Mountain ranges' and 'Jungmack' Jungmack: Old name of mountain rangeshave a different concept and classification method, object and usage are different as well. The difference between 'mountain ranges' and 'Jungmack' is how they are classified bywhat standard as the students in the same classroom can be classified by sex, family name, height and weight. There are various methods by its purpose and view to classify and explain the objects and phenomenon scientifically. It means that nothing can be explained by only one . But in reality of our geography education, various classification methods were not being explained and there is no clear explanation that 'mountain ranges' is a line of geological feature in their class.
In dictionaries 'mountain ranges' is defined as that 'a long row of mountains that covers a large area' or 'long series of connected mountain peaks ranged in a line'. But 'mountain range' in the Taebaek mountain range should be distinguished conceptionally from, 'Junggan Junggan : Old name of mountain rangesJungmack'in point of tectonic geological classification system in accordance with formation factors, which were trying to understand the forming process of topography with relation to the crustal movements and formation time, etc.
The theory of geographical features and tectonic geology were a field of geography before they are divided into individual theory or until the name of the geological geography comes out. Strictly saying, they are treated in the field of the geology, broadly earth science (geology, geophysics, geochemistry, ocean geology, astronomy, meteorology, oceanography). But in order to express the various phenomenon of the earth's surface, especially in the topography, they use same concept with the terminology of geology thatis a close study with it. Mountain range used in the geography and geology is 'a long row of mountain district that is formed at the same time and by same factors', not meaning necessarily uncut 'a series of mountain district'.
Even though, however, the word of mountain range is used in order to explain the formation factors and its phenomenon of geographical features(expressed in our country as 'Yookgoe', accumulated basin, 'Jihwangsa') and geological features(a fault, a fold, 'Boojunghap', 'Jullee'), they are students who are confused as the meaning of formation factors is not included in the name of Taebaek mountain range. We recognize that the word of mountain range and its general meaning was not changed from long ago. But as the word 'mountain range' of Taebaek mountain range turned into a word of western geography that was imported through the Japan, it happened to have a separated meaning of mountain range by gaining the concept of from [mountain range of dictionary meaning, mountain range of traditional meaning, mountain range of classification system based on the formation factors]. The conceptional errors have occurred, which the concept of was disappeared and let the people accept the word of with the concept of , by using and teaching the word of 'mountain range' without explaining the concept of definitely in our geography education.
While the western geography is a study describing the land, the eastern geography is a study to research the principle of the land. The western geologygeographers attachedimportance from the early to the process for the main factors of topography formation and developed the topography transmigrationism and the theory of geographical features, etc. These theories tried to explain 'what power forms and transits the topography' and 'what process makes such a topography formation' with the method of natural sciences and accessed very analytically.
But we approached 'what's the shape of land, where is good place to live with and how we harmonize, adjust and utilize' with the method of cultural sciences as our history have been managed on such a topography. And that is very stable earth's surface which is consisted of old age's mountains and peneplain-last stage according to the topography transmigrationism. It is to establish the view of geography macroscopically, generally and organicallyby synthesizing the results of regional observation nationally.
It is emphasized that 'mountain range' is an inadequate method to explain our country's geography geographically, topographically and regional geographically. It is not to reject due to the fact that Japanese made the system of mountain range, neither insist that only 'mountain scenery' is right because it is ours. It is to insist that "we have this view of geography and such a great classification system. Bring back this again and recognize, use, teach and hand down to descendants."And bring back the noble view of nature, view of landscape and view of nation that our ancestors had. Because 'mountain scenery' has scholastic system, scientific reasonableness and is very useful in an actual life.
The current system of mountain range should necessarily effect the scientific verification and be reviewed to decide whether to be covered in the geography textbook or earth science textbook. We should have verified the followings thoroughly after that. If Kotobunjiro's geographical features and geological features corresponded with the one investigated later, if mountain range's formation factors could be explained scientifically and definitely with the system of mountain range classified by him, if it had right understanding of our mountain ranges and reflected its features, if there were any relations with Japanese' invasion upon Korea. Also the research and historical investigation should have been done on our traditional geography. Here comes the problem.
